I finally got to try out @vitaliapizzapgh when they made their way to the South Hills at @backalleybrewing last week. I got one of their specials for the evening, the roasted garlic and bacon. It was a great combo of flavor and enhanced by the wood fired flavor. They have a really nice wood oven in their truck that gives the crust a nice char and a little wood smoke flavor to the pizza. Definitely give them a try if you see them out and about.

#AD I’m glad @grabango is now available to use at more stores like select @coenmarkets in Pittsburgh. This was the Coen Market in Oakdale. I typically use self-checkout when I can because I hate waiting in lines, but using Grabango time I could skip the line completely. I was running some errands and wanted to grab some snacks quickly so I didn’t fall behind schedule. Grabango allowed me to skip the line at Coen Market and check out instantly using an app on my phone and proprietary technology installed in the store. After installing the Grabango app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and creating an account, I picked up items around the store and the app knew exactly what I picked up. There are signs all over the store explaining how easy it is and how to get the app. I was able to get candy, drinks and prepared foods without worrying will it know what I’m picking up. When I was all done getting what I wanted, I opened up the app, scanned a QR code and I was all done and ready to get back to my errands. After a few minutes, my receipt loaded in my Grabango app.

I got a preview of @citywinery_pgh, the new wine bar, restaurant and entertainment venue in the Terminal in the Strip District. This small cultural and culinary venue concept chose Pittsburgh as their newest location. They have their own line of wines featuring ethically sourced grapes from vineyards in California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Argentina and Chile. I’m not much of a wine drinker so I opted mostly for their signature cocktails. Their Barrel Room wine bar and restaurant will be open regularly for Dinner and Brunch. I also got to try out some of the food that is on the menu. I really liked the samples of the burger and the lamb meatball. I’m most excited about City Winery as a venue for shows. They already have many musicians and comedians scheduled throughout the summer. A list of upcoming shows and the restaurant menu are on the City Winery website.

I was invited by @eddiemerlots to attend one of their monthly tasting dinners. This month featured five wines from @caymuscab Vineyards. These dinners are great for getting to try a lot of different wines along with a great meal. Except I’m a beer and whiskey guy. I think I get invited to wine dinners so they can try to make me like wine. At these tastings I pretend to look like I am a wine drinker swirling my wine, looking for fingers, letting it breathe, etc. But we all know I’m there for the food. The chef gets to create some fantastic off menu items for these dinners. My favorite dishes of the night were an amazing Halibut wrapped in Thinly Sliced Potatoes and served with Crispy Spinach and a Braised Short Rib with a Roasted Cauliflower Steak. The full menu is listed below. The Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon which was my favorite wine of the evening. Eddie Merlot’s lists future tasting dinners on their website.

Would you believe this steak was made in a counter

Would you believe this steak was made in a countertop convection oven?!?! I was sent by @nuwave.now their Pro Smart Oven to try it out see if it would make cooking easier, more efficient, and mostly if I like it. A while back I stopped using my big oven for small meals so I had gotten used to using a countertop convection oven regularly. This one from NuWave blows my old one away. I was excited for this one because it has so many great features. It has 100 preset settings for cooking different items and 50 programmable presets for your own recipes. It comes with a temperature probe to insert into your food so you can cook to the exact internal temperature. The coolest part to me is it's a smart oven so you can connect it to WiFi and use an app on your phone to select your presets and watch you cooking temperatures the whole time away from the oven. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now for air frying, toasting, reheating leftovers and grilling a NY Strip steak. It came with a non stick grill plate. I used a preset in the app to select I was making a steak medium rare. It preheated with the grill plate in the oven. Then I placed the temperature probe into the steak and placed it on the plate in the oven when it told me preheating was done. I could watch on the app to get to the right temperature to flip it, pull it out of the oven and after cook until it was medium rare. It honestly turned out great and just the right level of pink in the middle. I've also been so excited just by how it makes toast. It air fries the bread at the same time so it's crispy and not burnt. I'd say the only downside I've found is it takes a little longer to preheat than my old one, but the heat is so much more consistent.

I got a sushi lunch at @diners_2_1_sushi with some friends. I've always been told it was very good and wanted to try it out. I was impressed. I got the Sushi Sandwich which was layers of rice, spicy tuna, salmon, crab, avocado, tamago with a soy wrap. This was so different and delicious. I also got a tuna and avocado roll. My friends got a nigiri plate, chirashi bowl and crazy tuna roll. Everything looked so good and the fish looked very fresh. I'd definitely eat here again when in Squirrel Hill and craving sushi.

I was craving a burger and decided to make my way up the block to @jamisons_west_liberty. I went with the Cheese Louise with cheddar sauce, swiss, onion, tomato, pickle and bacon. I've always said Jamison's has some of the best burgers around and they also have some of the best bacon. They love the thick cut bacon and so do I. It just happened to also be wing night when I was there, which normally I'd be all over that, but I really wanted that burger. So I just got 5 wings with Gold sauce because I just had to get wings. Great choice and great meal!

I was invited to eat at @alchemy_pgh. It's a new restaurant in Market Square where dining is an experience featuring meals and cocktails made using molecular gastronomy. We shared charcuterie boards where you can pick out the different meats, cheeses and accoutrements. We split incredible starters like Brandied Pork Belly featuring a brandy shallot demi-glaze and purple potato fondant, Cast Iron Roasted Quail, and Shishitos with chocolate and peanut butter dipping sauces. I got to eat and enjoy two of the main courses. I first ate the delicious Burnt Orange and Marrow Ribeye featuring a koji rubbed ribeye cooked medium rare and so tender with wild mushrooms, baby carrots and a whipped Yukon puree. Half way I traded for the other half Seared Duck which was cooked sous vide and then seared and featuring a lot of sweet flavors and house made pomegranate pop rocks. The meal included lots of classic and innovative cocktails. I really enjoyed the Sleight of Hand which is a sweeter drink topped with smoke We finished the meal with a tabletop smores set with house made marshmallows and a tasty banana bread. This was a great meal and I need to go back to try so much more.

I had dinner at @tacosburgh with my parents the last night. They were in the mood for Mexican food and I've been meaning to eat at Tacosburgh again. We ordered a bunch of food and desserts. Everything was great and both parents said the food was delicious. I got the Quseabirria which was packed with meat. My mom got the fish taco and the tako Tako and bothe were huge. My dad got the Colorado Brisket Plato featuring smoked brisket, corn tortillas and rice and beans. Out desserts were the brownie, tres leches cake and whiskey bread pudding. I've had that etres leches before so I went with the bread pudding. It was sweet with a little boozy flavor and tasty. I definitely need to eat here more often since it's so close. They are on West Liberty near MacFarlane in Dormont.
